Image Orthodontics has been in the business of creating beautiful smiles in Sacramento for several years, and has now opened up a non-profit sector to allow patients that are less fortunate opportunities for treatment. The Annual Russian-Speaking Community Partners Capitol Reception will be celebrating founder of Image Orthodontics, Dr. Yan Kalika’s dedication to advocacy work through Smiles for a Lifetime at the California State Capitol, February 21 from 5:30-8:30.
Smiles for a Lifetime is a a non-profit, charitable organization comprised of local chapters throughout the country that provide high quality orthodontic treatment for patients who may not have the opportunity to achieve a beautiful, straight smile without financial assistance. Its mission is to create self-confidence, inspire hope, and change the lives of children in our communities in a dramatic way. The gift of a smile can do all this for a deserving, under-served individual who, in turn, can use this gift to better themselves and their community.
Dr. Kalika founded the San Francisco chapter of Smiles for a Lifetime in hopes of giving back to the community. “My goal with Smiles for a Lifetime is to acknowledge children who go above and beyond, and help them get the self confidence they deserve through a healthy smile.”
Each year, ten community activists are named and awarded by elected officials as Russian speaking community service members who have excelled in giving back to their community.
We invite you to come and celebrate the success of Dr. Yan Kalika’s Smiles for a Lifetime while meeting the leading advocates of Russian-American community affairs . Meet with elected officials, legislative members, and the most proactive leaders of the Russian-speaking community.
Annual Russian-Speaking Community Partners Capitol Reception is organized by Russian American Media, with support of Council for Cross Cultural Affairs, Slavic Community Center of Sacramento Inc., Council for Slavic-American Affairs, Slavic-American Chamber of Commerce, APAPA, United International Art Association and designated to facilitate a successful assembly of the Russian-American communities through the acknowledgment of the key contributors of the inter-community relations.
Please join us at February 21, 2012 at 5:30PM in the Rotunda Hall at the California State Capitol.

Even the most conscientious, self-motivated orthodontic patient is bound to experience a few problems when dealing with braces. While most orthodontic problems can be treated with at-home remedies, other situations require the services of a qualified orthodontist. Learn what to do when you’re facing a problem or possible emergency with your new braces:
Sore Teeth
Many orthodontic patients tend to experience minor discomfort after having their braces placed or undergoing a wire-adjustment. Fortunately, teeth and jaw soreness can be alleviated by using a warm washcloth, warm salt-water rinse, or heating pad. Patients can also alleviate minor soreness by taking acetaminophen or other non-aspirin pain relievers.
Wire Irritation
Another common problem for patients with braces is wire irritation. Patients who are suffering from irritation along their gums can try to move the wire away from the area using a clean cotton swab or eraser tip. In the event that the wire does not move, patients can use a small amount of wax or cotton to cover the area of the wire causing irritation. However, patients who experience irritation due to a broken or misaligned wire should contact their orthodontist for treatment.
Loose Brackets
Individuals who find that their wires or brackets become loose should consult with their orthodontist to determine if the appliance needs to be re-fitted immediately. If necessary, a patient may be able to temporarily trim the wire or slide the bracket off until they have seen their orthodontist for repair.
Lost Separators
It is common for orthodontic patients to lose one of their separators during treatment. Patients who lose a separator should contact their orthodontist’s office to schedule an appointment to have the separator replaced.

While flossing your teeth when you have braces may be initially difficult for you, flossing your teeth on a daily basis is a crucial component of your orthodontics treatment.
In this video, we take a closer look at the techniques used to floss your teeth with braces. Start by directing the floss underneath the arch-wire with your hand or by using a floss-threader. When using a threader, be sure to direct the device away from your gum line so that you can avoid poking yourself and causing irritation. Learn how to move from one tooth to another in this full clip.
