Understanding the Invisalign Process

Last updated 10 months ago

The Invisalign system is a revolutionary orthodontic treatment method that gradually straightens your teeth without the need for metal brackets or arch-wires. Unlike traditional braces, the Invisalign system utilizes a series of clear, removable aligners to treat a wide variety of malocclusions, or “bad bites.” While your orthodontist can determine if Invisalign is right for you, it is important to educate yourself on the Invisalign treatment process.

Digital X-Rays
Before initiating treatment, your orthodontist will take a series of dental x-rays, pictures, and impressions or molds of your teeth in order to create a digital, three-dimensional image of your oral structures. This information is then used to create an accurate treatment plan that maps out the exact movements of your teeth.

Aligner Creation
Once the three-dimensional treatment plan has been created, the information will be sent to a laboratory where a series of custom-made aligners will be created using a smooth, BPA-free plastic material. The number of aligners created will be between 12 and 48 aligners, with the exact number depending on your specific level of malocclusion. It is important to wear your aligners for between 20 and 22 hours per day as instructed by your orthodontist to ensure optimal results. Most patients are instructed to wear each aligner for approximately two weeks before switching to the next aligner in the series.

Intermittent Checkups
Your orthodontist will have you return to the office for checkup visits, which usually occur about every six weeks. This will enable your doctor to analyze your progress and ensure that there are no problems.

Retention Treatment
As with other types of orthodontic treatment, your orthodontist may fit you for a retaining device after you are finished with the last aligner in the series. Retaining devices are essential, as they keep your newly aligned teeth from shifting back into their original positions.
