Three Differences between Invisalign and Traditional Braces
Making the decision to undergo orthodontic treatment is a great first step—but with so many treatment methods available, determining which one is best for you is not always easy. A good way to decide is to consider the differences between Invisalign and traditional braces.
1. Materials
Invisalign uses a series of clear, plastic aligners to straighten the teeth while traditional braces utilize metal brackets and archwires which can irritate the inside of the mouth. The Invisalign system is often more comfortable as the aligners are made from a smooth plastic material which eliminates the risk of irritation.
2. Treatment Process
Before starting Invisalign the patient will undergo a series of digital pictures which are transmitted to create a computerized three-dimensional model of the mouth. This model is used to map out an accurate treatment plan. A series of 12 to 48 custom-made aligners are then created to gradually straighten the teeth. Each aligner is worn for 20 to 22 hours per day for a two week period, after which it is exchanged for the next aligner in the series. Invisalign treatment is not appropriate for all patients, especially those with severe malocclusions. Patients who opt for traditional braces will have brackets cemented onto the surface of their teeth which are attached by a series of archwires. These archwires are kept in place using elastic ties and connect to metal bands wrapped around the back molars. Patients with traditional braces see their orthodontist on a regular basis for examinations and appliance adjustments.
3. Food Restrictions
Individuals with traditional braces must avoid a number of foods which can damage the brackets, including:
- Gum
- Hard candy and lollipops
- Caramel and chewy candy
- Chips
- Hard cookies
- Nuts
- Ice cubes
- Popcorn
- Chicken wings
- Beef jerky
- Hard breads or bagels
- Whole fruits
- Corn on the cob
Because the Invisalign aligners are removable, patients utilizing this orthodontic treatment method generally have no food restrictions.
